Several Fall Into Sea As Death Toll Reaches 57

On a beach in northern France, dozens of refugees struggle to board a flimsy boat as several fall into the water. Photographs show migrants falling into the water as they attempt to board an inflatable dinghy.

A rudimentary black dinghy was rocked by waves as about two dozen young men wearing bright orange life jackets tried desperately to climb aboard.

The incident occurred on Plage d'Écault in Saint-Étienne-au-Mont, close to Neufchâtel-Hardelot, a popular tourist destination.

People smugglers may be attempting to take advantage of favorable weather just a few weeks before winter begins.

It comes after four migrants died on Wednesday while attempting to cross the English Channel, bringing this year's total to 57.

People smugglers are allegedly herding larger groups onto smaller boats as a result of France and Britain's efforts to crack down on migrant crossings, according to report.
