Why are Nigerians deported in their numbers?
Being a curated rundown from a Nigerian-Born Migration Researcher, Divine Chukwuemeka, codenamed as (JAPA Queen), who have volunteered herself for the task of studying people's movement from one place to the other.
Sharing her insights into people's migration with Orionframe, According to M.S Devine, First, I'll give the contextual meaning of the keywords.
✔️JAPA➖run away from Nigeria to another country in search of greener pastures.
✔️JAPADA➖the opposite of 'japa' to return to Nigeria after running away.
✔️ DEPORTATION ➖removal of an individual from a country, basically it's you "japa-ed" but they pursued you back.
📍The deportation rate of a Nigerians especially from Italy, Germany, UK, Ireland and Greece has become an issue of concern.
For instance, the UK approximately deported;
➖1,105 Nigerians ( 2015)
➖22,800 Nigerians (2023)
📍You see the figures and the way it skyrocketed,
and some reasons for the deportation includes;
➖Lack identification Documents
➖Overstaying the residency period as indicated on their visa
➖Stricter Immigration policies, you came in when X was tolerated now it is not tolerated hence you have to leave
➖Migrating into the country illegally
➖And most common is criminal activity or track record, why did your murder the shopkeeper or sell drugs?
📍Deportation doesn't end there, it comes with the following;
➖Financial challenges- deportees might have to start afresh from scratch
➖Emotional challenges - family members might express disappoinment in them
➖Societal issues - the 'deportee' tag is hanged on their neck and they are sometimes discriminated against or tagged failures
➖Threats - some deportees can be threats to societal peace or they struggle with instabilities hence the need to put them in rehabilitation centers.
➖Reduced Remittances- the country would not enjoy the tax or revenue on the money they send into the country again
➖Bad name- deportation is not a good thing in it's quintessential form, hence it drags the country's name to the mud.
