His real name is Michael Obi. According to him: "It started when I was a kid playing in the under-17 tournament. We were at a hotel, and everyone was submitting their names to be printed on the back of their shirts. The team secretary asked me for my name, and I told him 'Michael Obi', giving him the option to choose between the two. Later, when he returned with the shirts, I noticed the error just 30 minutes before the game. I wanted to correct it, but it was too late, so I had to wear the shirt with the misspelled name onto the pitch. It was an amazing game. After that I felt there was no need to change the name. So, I just settled on 'Mikel'.
